Sloped Roofs

Breakdown of shingles is more evident inside key ways (vertical slots), where debris gets trapped and breaks down. Pine trees are notorious for destroying shingles this way due to the acidic makeup of the pine needles ( about 8 to 10 years into the life span of the roof ).  If the shingles seem reasonable, take a closer look inside the key ways.

A common mistake is to allow a down pipe extension to drain from an upper level to a lower slope. The problem is, this cuts the life of the shingles in half in the area the water is draining onto.

Shingles and valleys alike have degraded to the point of water penetration in this example.  This roof is 3 years past due.
